This morning, just a few hours before sequester cuts are scheduled to take effect, President Obama held a news conference where he talked about the ongoing negotiations with Congress. The President expressed his frustration with conservatives who still refuse to make revenue a part of the sequester replacement:
And let’s be clear: None of this is necessary. It’s happening because a choice that Republicans in Congress have made. They’ve allowed these cuts to happen because they refuse to budge on closing a single wasteful loophole to help reduce the deficit.
As recently as yesterday, they decided to protect special- interest tax breaks for the well-off and the well-connected, and they think that that’s apparently more important than protecting our military or middle-class families from the pain of these cuts.
The President is right. It’s ludicrous that some of the hardest-working Americans have to sacrifice even more in order to pay for these tax breaks. It’s time for EVERYONE to pay their fair share, and only the President’s approach follows that philosophy.
