More Than 420,000 Americans Tell Senator Hatch: No Tax Cuts for Millionaires and Wealthy Corporations!

July 18, 2017

Dear Senator:

Last month, Senate Finance Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch requested input from the public for upcoming tax-reform legislation. He invited “experts and stakeholders” to submit comments via email. And he got his wish.

Over 420,000 Americans submitted letters to Sen. Hatch by yesterday’s deadline in opposition to tax cuts for millionaires, billionaires, and wealthy corporations.

A coalition of 22 groups coordinated by Americans for Tax Fairness Action Fund, Daily Kos and CREDO generated more than 390,000 of those messages. The full list of partner organizations in that action is below. An additional 32,000 letters were generated by the Tax March and Stand Up America.

So many letters were generated that the designated email address for public input could no longer accept messages. Instead, senders received the following message, “The recipient’s mailbox is full and can’t accept messages now. Please try resending this message later, or contact the recipient directly.”

A sample message provided by the coalition of groups, used by many of the concerned citizens said, “I am opposed to Donald Trump’s and the GOP’s plan to give huge tax breaks to millionaires and wealthy corporations, which will be paid for by cutting Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, education, and other critical services.”

(Full sample letter below. Senders were also able to write their own text or edit the sample letter. Links to action pages here and here and some groups had separate action pages.)

Subject: We need the wealthy and big corporations to pay their fair share

I am a U.S. taxpayer, and I am opposed to Donald Trump’s and the GOP’s plan to give huge tax breaks to millionaires and wealthy corporations, which will be paid for by cutting Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, education, and other critical services. Half of the Trump tax cuts will go to the richest 1%, while big corporations holding profits offshore get a huge tax cut. Instead, we need real tax reform to make sure the wealthy and big corporations pay their fair share.

Here are our tax principles that we urge Congress to act on:
a. No more tax cuts for the wealthy and big corporations. They should pay their fair share of taxes―a lot more than they pay now.
b. Invest those tax dollars in our country’s future―in public roads and transit systems; quality and affordable early childhood education; public schools and higher education; researching new medical cures; and ensuring a secure retirement for all of us by strengthening Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.
c. Eliminate all tax breaks that encourage multinational corporations to shift jobs and profits offshore.
d. Require corporations to pay the $750 billion they owe on their $2.6 trillion in offshore profits. Use the funds to rebuild roads and bridges, improve schools and create millions of good-paying jobs.

Sincerely,

Frank Clemente
