Jeffries-led Discharge Petition to Extend ACA Tax Credits Only Viable Path to Avoid Spiking Healthcare Costs for 20 Million Americans

January 8, 2026

Americans for Tax Fairness released the following statement by its Executive Director, David Kass, on House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries’s discharge petition passing the House of Representatives to extend the Affordable Care Act Premium Tax credits for the next 3 years:

“Today’s bipartisan vote in the House to extend these essential tax credits that make life-saving healthcare more affordable for millions is welcome progress. It shows that this legislation is currently the only viable path to immediately and meaningfully address this impending, self-inflicted crisis after President Trump and Congressional Republicans failed to take action last year. But while this would be a welcome solution to the expired tax credits, the healthcare crisis will continue due to over $1 trillion of pending cuts to Medicaid that were made in OBBA  to fund trillions in tax giveaways for their billionaire and big business backers. The Senate must pass this bill as is and as quickly as possible. The American people do not want healthcare to get more expensive while billionaires are getting more tax cuts than any other time in history.”
