Dems Must Reject All Cuts to Services: Cuts That Harm Families, Kids, Education Don’t Deserve Consideration

Washington, D.C. – In response to today’s report that Congressional Republicans are refusing to consider any tax increases for the ultra-wealthy or billion-dollar corporations in budget negotiations with the White House, tax fairness advocates are urging Democrats to take an equally firm stand against the GOP’s proposed cuts to services that help working families. Reforms targeting the wealthy and corporations already proposed by President Biden could raise trillions of dollars to lower public debt without raising taxes on anyone making less than $400,000 a year.

“Republicans created this debt crisis with their repeated tax giveaways to the wealthy and corporations. By refusing to even consider reforms to this rigged tax system, House Republicans have made clear that their goal in holding America’s economy hostage with their debt brinkmanship is not actually to reduce deficits, but to protect their wealthy friends and donors from paying their fair share of taxes and make working families pick up the tab,” said David Kass, executive director of Americans for Tax Fairness. “Democrats should answer in kind, by refusing to consider cuts to investments in our working families and communities. Republicans should not be rewarded for their stubborn determination to shield the rich and corporations from paying their fair share of taxes.”
