Frank Clemente, executive director of Americans for Tax Fairness, released the following statement on Rep. Richard Neal’s request today for six years of President Donald Trump’s tax returns.
“Rep. Neal has done the right thing by requesting the president’s tax returns and deserves our thanks. The legal justification for his request is narrow and focused on whether the required IRS audits of presidential tax returns are being conducted appropriately – most likely to overcome what is sure to be a legal challenge on behalf of the president.
“We believe evidence of significant tax avoidance will be revealed in Donald Trump’s tax returns. If so it is critical that the information is released to the public. As we said in our report The Case for Congress Obtaining Trump’s Tax Returns, Congress has the legal authority to obtain the president’s tax records. More important, the public deserves to know if the president is a serial tax dodger (as we suspect), has compromising financial relationships with public officials or business people in Russia or other foreign countries, or has any other conflicts of interest that could adversely affect the exercise of his official duties, such as legislation he wants Congress to enact into law.”
