Today, the billionaire-backed Senate Republican majority voted to pass Trump’s reconciliation bill, which makes the largest cuts in Medicaid and SNAP history while slashing billions from other essential programs to fund tax benefits for billionaires and large corporations. If this bill is passed, it is projected that 20 million Americans could lose their health insurance and 2 million will lose access to food stamps. The Senate’s passage of the bill today, after weekend sessions and early morning hours, reflects the GOP majority’s pattern of minimizing public attention. The reconciliation bill now moves to the House.
“Senate Republicans voted to make the largest cut in Medicaid and SNAP in history while cutting billions from other programs their constituents depend on to give billionaires and wealthy corporations trillions in tax giveaways,” said David Kass, ATF Executive Director. “Throughout this process, whether it’s the billionaire-backed GOP majority in the House or Senate, they have met in secret and pushed through key parts of the bill in the dead of night to hide from public scrutiny. They know their tax plan is a politically toxic scam meant to enrich their elite donors at the cost of their own constituents’ access to life-saving and sustaining programs. Make no mistake, this fight is not over. A sizable number of Republicans in the House voiced concern about the massive cuts to Medicaid and SNAP, in addition to the trillions this bill adds to the national debt. Since the House last voted for the bill, the Senate has only made the bill more expensive and enacted more cuts to critical programs that their constituents rely on. The question is will House members stand up for their constituents, or blindly follow Trump and his elite backers?”
