House GOP Votes to Cut Medicaid, Nutrition, Education & Add $4 Trillion to Deficit for Corporate & Billionaire Tax Breaks

Today, the Republican majority on the House Budget Committee is advancing a budget resolution that would enact $2.5 trillion in cuts to vital public programs, including Medicaid, nutrition assistance, and education to help fund their massive tax giveaway for the ultra-wealthy and big corporations. If enacted, their tax package would cost more than $5 trillion over ten years, redirecting money and healthcare from millions of Americans to benefit mostly the wealthy and well-connected.

“The House GOP is poised to advance a budget bill that benefits their billionaire and corporate donors at the expense of their constituents and adding trillions to the deficit,” said David Kass, ATF Executive Director. “Make no mistake: this bill represents a massive transfer of wealth from American families to the top. It makes no sense to strip healthcare, nutrition services, and education programs from millions of working and middle-class Americans to fund Trump’s $5 trillion in tax giveaways to the ultra-wealthy and big business. The GOP majority is likely to reject all amendments aimed at making the tax system fairer and protecting vital programs. If Members of Congress care about fiscal responsibility and working Americans as much as they claim, they must reject this bill and allow these harmful tax cuts to expire.”

List of cuts to pay for Trump’s Tax Scam:

  • Massive cuts of $230 billion to key nutritional programs that families depend on, like SNAP, to help fund a $350 billion pass-through deduction for millionaires.
  • $880 billion in cuts to vital health coverage like Medicaid—removing enough funding to kick millions of Americans off their healthcare coverage—to help fund Trump’s tax giveaway to the wealthy and well-connected.
  • The Republican budget proposal could impact healthcare and food assistance for millions of Americans. According to analyses, up to 36 million individuals might lose Medicaid coverage, while over 40 million people could face reduced SNAP benefits, with many potentially losing food assistance entirely.
  • The GOP is proposing Education and Workforce Committee cuts that could impact the   5 million undergraduates annually who rely on federal student loans. This could mean current students and past borrowers face potential increases in loan costs.
  • The GOP does not extend ACA premium tax credits, as a result, 20+ million people face higher healthcare costs, including 3 million small business owners, with 4 million at risk of losing health coverage altogether.

Yesterday, a coalition of over 126 national, state, and local unions and grassroots organizations—representing millions of working people—called on Congress to reject any legislation that extends the 2017 Trump tax cuts for the rich and big corporations.
