Trump Forces IRS to Share Immigration Data with DHS to Advance Mass Deportations

Today, undocumented immigrants and mixed-status families face an increasingly difficult situation as tax day approaches. Last week, the Trump administration announced an unprecedented agreement between the Internal Revenue Service and the Department of Homeland Security that allows department officials to access sensitive tax information for potential mass deportations. Undocumented immigrants are vital to the American economy and tax system, contributing $96.7 billion in taxes in 2022. Last month, ATF released a new analysis showing that undocumented immigrants pay a higher effective tax rate than 55 major corporations and many of the nation’s wealthiest individuals.

“This tax day, the Trump administration is putting mixed-status and undocumented families in an impossible position for political gain. The forced collaboration with DHS officials is a complete violation of trust of these taxpayers, who contribute positively to the economy and pay their fair share for services they don’t even benefit from,” said David Kass, ATF Executive Director. “Trump and his billionaire backers would rather go after our neighbors and community members who actually pay their taxes than root out and hold accountable ultra-wealthy and corporate tax cheats. Despite their rhetoric, we know undocumented families did not create our rigged economic and tax systems—billionaires did. Congress must stop this blatant and unchecked misuse of sensitive IRS data.”
