In response to the Supreme Court’s ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which would end the Constitutional right to an abortion, Americans for Tax Fairness Executive Director Frank Clemente released the following statement:
Today, a far-right Supreme Court, unrestrained by precedent, ruled to reverse a basic fundamental freedom strongly supported by the public that will have far-reaching effects on the health and well-being of women, families and communities across the nation. Further, the Court signaled that today’s decision is only the beginning, with other fundamental rights and core progressive priorities in its crosshairs.
Most of these conservative justices were appointed by presidents who lost the popular vote making it glaringly clear that the electoral system is serving the needs of the few at the expense of the many. This decision will not only endanger womens’ lives; it will also serve to exacerbate economic inequality, further burdening individuals and families who are already marginalized and whose needs are underrepresented. Healthcare and childcare are very costly, and the consequences of this decision will fall disproportionately on low-income women because the senators who voted for these justices are opposed to fully funding vital programs such as paid leave, childcare and more generous child tax credits.
We share the revulsion at this decision with the nation and join with the voices of our allies to call on Congress to codify Roe. As advocates for tax fairness and an economy that works for all Americans, we know that a Court committed to serving the wealthiest few at the expense of the rest of us poses an existential threat to the government’s ability to regulate, to protect core rights, and yes, to tax the wealthy and corporations and invest in our future. Americans for Tax Fairness remains strongly committed to the fight for gender justice and economic equity for all people.
