GOP Senators’ Support for Billionaire Nominees Reveals Ultra-Weathy’s Control Over Trump Economic Policy

January 30, 2025

Yesterday, the GOP-controlled Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation and the Senate Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee held confirmation hearings for two of Trump’s economic policy positions— billionaire Howard Lutnick for Commerce Secretary and billionaire Kelly Loeffler for Administrator of the Small Business Administration. In response, Americans for Tax Fairness released the following statement.

“Yesterday’s hearings made it clear—Trump and his GOP allies in the Senate want to give their billionaire donors control over our economy to serve their narrow personal financial interests at the expense of working Americans,” said ATF Executive Director David Kass. ” Both Lutnick and  Loeffler back Trump’s $5 trillion giveaway in new tax breaks for billionaires like themselves and gigantic corporations. Individuals with such deep ties to Wall Street will never represent Main Street’s interests. The writing is on the wall: they plan to cut programs that families rely on to further enrich themselves and their fellow billionaires. These nominations prove the Trump administration is being run for and by billionaires.”

For more information on President Trump’s incoming economic advisors, agency heads, and department leaders, see ATF’s recent report. The report details appointees and nominees with a history of supporting economic policies that benefit themselves and large corporations while disadvantaging ordinary citizens. Among these officials, the ten wealthiest have an average net worth of $502 million.
